With warmer months comes outdoor festivals, especially music festivals. The most famous music festival in the US is, of course, Coachella. Known for its wide range of music and distinct fashion, Coachella is more of a phenomenon than a simple music festival.
But what exactly is Coachella? And what does it have to do with fashion?
Co-founded by music promoters Paul Tollet and Rick Van Santen, Coachella first took place in October of 1999. After that event, the festival shifted to being held in April, something it continues to this day. It takes place in Indio, California and is the second-most in-demand concert ticket in the world, second only to Tomorrowland in Belgium. Not only does it promote music, it promotes visual art like installation art and sculpture.
Coachella is also known for its fashion. Michael Mente, co-founder of the fashion brand Revolve, even compared it to New York Fashion Week. The reason? It's become a place celebrities want to be seen, which means that what they're wearing is going to be scrutinized and then copied.
So what should you wear to Coachella, or any other music festival?
If you look up "music festival clothing" online, you're going to see a lot of differing results, from flowy boho skirts to cute crop tops to colorful bodysuits. And those are all fantastic options! But if you're more low-key like yours truly and want to wear something more comfortable, then tie-dye clothes and retro and band t-shirts are a tried and true method of looking like you belong at a music festival.
And I've found that the best place to shop for these types of clothes is Junk Food Clothing. This brand has a whole section dedicated to festival clothing on their website that includes t-shirts featuring bands from The Beatles to AC/DC, retro t-shirts with funny sayings, and tie-dye pants and shirts. They really do have it all!
